Dental Implants

If you have one or more missing teeth and don’t like the idea of dentures or cutting other teeth to make a bridge, then the latest advances in dental implants may be ideal for you.

What are they?

Simply put, they are a completely new fixed tooth or teeth made from titanium and porcelain, without the need to cut other healthy teeth.

Implants, like natural teeth can support chewing forces, which in turn  stops bone from shrinking where the original tooth was extracted and can restore normal function and appearance.

Who can have them?

• Most adults with good to moderate health
• Any age after growth has completed, usually over 20years of age
• Some patients with controlled medical conditions may also be suitable

What is involved?

With advances in techniques and technology, most implants may be placed through a small hole made in the gum between 3mm and 5mm wide, under the anaesthetic injection used during regular tooth fillings. Sometimes, a wider opening of the gum is required to accommodate and deal with any difficult situations that may be detected at the initial examination, such as the need to add bone or gum (grafting) to improve the result.

Generally, implants will take between 2 and 6 months on average to complete, after which regular hygiene and care are a must to ensure longevity of the implants.
